So, my campus has been in a bit of turmoil lately due to a racist article being printed in the newspaper, but a follow-up article this week talked about the reverse racism of Affirmative Action.
I know this topic gets debated alot, and I suppose the question is, if minorities are disproportionately less well off, is this giving them a leg-up, or is it preventing better qualified whites from getting a shot at jobs?

i think affirmative action is like a reperation, but how far is too far?
people should be looked at for their skills not there skin color or ethnic background,
what does that really matter?

Yes, it's racist. It's determining placement in jobs/schools by race/gender/creed.
Therefore it's racist.
A worker should be hired based upon their skillset. And a private employer should have the right to hire or fire whoever the fuck they want. Quotas are gay.

I think the idea is that since minorities are disproportionately represented within the lower social strata, if given more opportunities for advancement, they can move out of poverty, slums, etc.
do i think it's working? nope. it doesn't help that, at least to me, it seems that black culture has no desire for serious advancement, at least economically.

that is because they have become dependent on the government through welfare, if they try to make a positive move they are rewarded by losing their welfare check, so what is the incentive? It is like being a junkie, free money is addicting :noes:

Totally agreed. Whats the point in spending thousands of dollars on college if your just going to lose out on an uneducated minority to fill quota's?

I agree that affirmative action is pretty much racist at its core, but I still approve. Whatever we can do to reverse the our current situation of having more blacks in prison than in college can only be a good thing. SUre, we're giving them $20 grand for four years in college now, but if we don't, we'll just be spending $80K a year on keeping Jamal in prison for armed robbery.

most blacks are in prison because of drug charges, or something related. selling drugs is a great way to get yourself out of poverty.. until you get caught.
so make drugs legal. :)

i think its a pretty good idea to begin with, but its somewhat outlived its use. We tell people to look at others without color, then reward certain races for college admissions or job opportunities. Seems counter intuitive. That's coming from a minority.

The thing about AA is that minorities are being told how much is the minimum to get by. Its discriminatory to the minorities as a whole.. not so much to white people. People of equal intelligence/education, etc will always been in competition for the same jobs. AA allows that safety bumper for those who just seem to "scrape by."
But it is old. EOEs are being politically correct., all they want is the label. For the most part I want to believe that most employers recognize that AA is old, and archaic... they just use the EOE placard as an ethical superiority in business because they recognize that minorities, namely blacks and Mexicans are illequipped to handle the white peoples minimum. So they set the bar lower. AA is racist to everyone

Affirmative action is basically making it law to treat blacks the way everyone was fighting against during the civil rights movement. I have no problems with "handouts" to the poor to give them opportunities for job training and education. In fact, I support it. But as soon as you put race as the primary qualifier the act becomes inherently racist. I see no reason why one kid in the ghetto should have a leg up over another simply because of the color of their skin.

It is discriminatory to HIRE or FIRE anyone based simply upon race/gender/religion etc. which do not directly effect the job.

Word. It's not even race that's important, IMHO. I know a black guy who got into an Ivy League school who was much richer than me and most of my friends. While he was decently smart, (top 10 people/1800 SATs), he wasn't Ivy League material. Whereas me (top 15 people/2100 SATs) and a guy I knew (salutorian/2300s/National winner of math competitions and shit) didn't get accepted to Ivys. He did get into Caltech tho
