I'm a poor college student... and I'll probably be in the need of a daily driver for my summer internship. What would be a good, reliable, daily beater to get that can be obtained for cheap? Really, the cheaper the better.. I don't care too much about aesthetics but safety is a definite concern.
Btw, by cheap I mean in the $0-7k price range for a used car.

accord, camry, malibu, lumina, altima, possible a maxima. olds alero is actually a pretty nice/semi-sporty (2 door or the one with the spoiler) and were usually pretty optioned out (leather, power windows, locks, seats).
if you want a truck, s10s and rangers can be had fairly cheap. or nissans and probably some tacomas in the 7k range.

what... no civic?
I believe he hit all the best cars. But take note that some cars even though they're cheap could cost you in maintenance. For example, older eclipe could be had for $5000. If it's a turbo model then be careful, problems will come up and could cost you more in the long run.
Depending on how much you drive, older american cars are very reliable but the gas mileage isn't the greatest. Camaro's can be had easily less than 5 grand and will last you for years to come.
Personally if you are just thinking about getting from point A to point B and you don't care how you get there... used accord, civic, camry, etc. are decent in holding value and get excellent mileage.
If you're buying a used car, higher a mechanic to go with you a do a check of the car. You don't want to buy something then 3 months later replace a $500 part when a $100 inspection could have proved it was faulty to begin with.

i avoided the civic b/c he may want a car with some room. of course it's a great commuter car, but it's too small for my preferences.

I had a 95 coupe that I drove all around the southeast playing shows with my band. We managed to fit my entire half stack, the bass player's amp, and 3-4 guitars in it every time with no problem. Folding back seats FTW.

hatchbacks are the best, long hatchbacks are even greater because you can leave the hatch open for large shit and just tie it down like a truck.
get one of these:

make sure it isn't modified first and get a manual.

just re-read your post again. i generally don't associate hatch cars with safe. that doesn't mean they aren't, but generally not viewed upon as that.

1990-1993 Accord. Best years of one of the best cars ever built. You can find them for around $2k, put another $1k into catching up all of the routine maintenance, and it will fucking run forever.
It's Jesus, lol.

If you are going to spend up the 7grand, you can get a lot of car for that money as opposed to anything that will serve as just to get you from point a to B. Do you care about looks? If not, then just buy some 80s honda sold by some old lady for like $500

everyone elses answers are wrong.
I bought this '97 neon sport 5spd coupe for $500, the speedometer sometimes doesn't work, and the odometer is way way wrong, but I haven't had to service it once since I bought it and it gets unbelievable gas mileage. I can go to cleveland and back on $3 of gas (one gallon) and it's a 20 minute drive there 20 minute drive back.

It's the one between the others you can't see much. It's the only pic I can find of the car because it's not special enough to take pictures of.
other cars pictured: '07 eclipes, '93 mark viii, '63 1/2 galaxy 500 original white paint '89 toyota lightning, '89 probe gt, and a '04 kenny brown marauder s.
