the Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM & epically the Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM look a bit too flimsy

I have the SIGMA 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS ... which is a great lens but it's too damn heavy when you add an external flash (430EX) to it ... not to mention the 430EX doesn't cover the up a 200mm focal length :noes:

well if you need it then go for it :h5:
personally I would stick with a sigma or some cheaper alternative and suck up the cheaper feel, but I'm still a noob anyway

you're probably going to want something that can shoot a lower aperture than f/4 if you're shooting indoors

I have the 17-85 IS, 28-135 and used to have the 28-105.
The 17-85 is light years ahead of the 28-105, about on par with the 28-135 though. I use the 17-85 more because of the wide angle.
Good as a "walk-around" but if you're interested in portrait photography, maybe invest in a 85mm?

for a good walk around in your price range, i would go with the sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5.http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=186589
