i have had mine both ways for several months at a time with no issues but it was sitting on the actual entertainment center with plenty of breathing room.

My "entertainment center" is a 10 year old sony tv w/ a tv stand that was made for cable boxes and vcr's, lol.
So I put the ps3 on its box, to get it off the carpet.

I think I've had the fan on mine crank up once since I got it, not really worried. Certainly not like the hairdryer sound my friends 360's make.

ya i have first gen ps3 and i don;t have any over heating issues. it does dump alot of heat in the room when i leave it on though.
