You can download Ubuntu from HERE (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors).

I would recommend dual booting it as I'm sure most of the programs you are would be missed if you no longer had them. You have two options in regards to installing it as dual boot. Either a full re-format of your system and start afresh, or you can repartition your hard drive to create space for Ubuntu (de-frag your hard drive first).

I use a free program called Gparted (download from HERE (http://gparted-livecd.tuxfamily.org/) ) which you can use to shrink your windows partition. Of course this carries risks, but personally I've shrunk and re-shrunk quad boot drives many times and never had a problem using Gparted.

When you add Ubuntu, you must always install it AFTER you have installed/already have installed Windows, as Ubuntu will install a program called GRUB, GRUB is a Boot Loader, so when you turn on your machine you have a simple menu from where you select which OS you wish to boot into. It's easily configured so that your machine will auto boot into whatever OS you normally wish to use.

Benefits? There are a ton more free and more powerful tools made for Linux, and it will run much faster than Windows to. The downside is that it is harder to use than Windows.

To begin with I would download the Live CD of Ubuntu from the link I listed first, then you can simply place the CD into your drive, start your PC up and it will work from the go - and will make no permanent changes to how your system is currently setup. If you like it, go ahead and install it. Not for you? No harm done. On that hardware it would fucking fly!

There are more knowledgeable Linux people on here than me, the SLI graphics card you have may cause an issue, I know the latest version (7.10) has new support for Nvidia cards, so may work fine, but best top check first.

Lastly how does your PC connect to the internet? Ethernet or USB DSL modem, the DSL USB modems I've found are a total ball ache.

You have said "add this program", it isn't a program. It is an operating system. When using it you can't run any of your windows programs or play CS or use PS. You would have to restart your computer and boot up into windows to do that. It may, or may not, be what you are after. It's a good OS, but may not be what you are after.

Download VMWare's VMWare Player and boot up an already installed VMWare Ubuntu image from http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/cat/45

Although this is news to me, if you wanted to go that route, why not install VMWare and just run the OS like an application?

Running the current beta version? It has bugs, just mentioned that it fails to play flash sounds for one. Wait for the official release.

Yep, the developers have made some significant changes in this regard, especially in terms of nvidia graphic cards.

Just waiting for the official release of hardy heron. Hope they hurry up, needing a fresh reformat soon.

Do you still need to reformat every so often with Linux like you do with Windows? That's one of the few reasons I might make a Linux partition to use for daily stuff and watching videos and shit and just keep a Windows partition for gaming, but if I still need to reformat like once every few months I doubt I'd use it.

if you take care of it no. you don't need to with windows either if you take care of it and keep it clean

Tony, Ubuntu is not a 'program' its a full operating system. Completely different that windows and [argueably] more stable. It's what I deal with at work... I've got a CD already if you want i can help you dual-boot it this weekend... give me a call (if i dont talk to you before they approve this post)

it does work, but its buggy at times.

shit i am dealing with on the latest release is:

resolution is fucked up
trying to fix the resolution crashes the program
no support for my wireless card

other than that, it was great. very lightweight and not nearly as susceptible to virae as windows.

if you have patience, then its for you

Yeah i don't use it all the time. Just when I want to learn more about it, or use certain apps. My resolution is semi screwed to.
